Angre Port
RPS was appointed by Chowgule Ports and Infrastructure Pvt Ltd to provide masterplanning, design and technical review services for a green field port development. The port is at Jaigad, approximately 200 miles south of Mumbai on India’s west coast.
The project comprised the construction of a commercial port, ship repair yard, associated landside infrastructure and capital dredging works.

Challenge
Based at a remote greenfield site, the port development project presented the engineering team with a range of challenges including:
- A remote site with associated logistical problems
- A steep escarpment to the sea with very limited land available at sea level for port hinterland and difficulties with HGV access
- A range of services to be accommodated including bulk materials, containers, general cargo and ship repair facilities
- An estuarine environment with significant challenges in respect of maintenance dredging during and after the monsoon season
- Difficult ground conditions with significant depths of alluvium present.
Solution
RPS worked closely with the client team in the early stages of the project to ensure the chosen solution met the needs cost-effectively while addressing key local physical constraints.
A key aspect was optimising the 5 km dredged approach channel. RPS undertook a significant computational hydraulic model to ensure channel alignment and encouraged ‘self-flushing’ during the monsoon season to minimise maintenance dredging whilst maintaining navigational safety.
The adoption of an optimised access road also assisted in minimising the extent of excavations required while ensuring efficient vehicle access on steep slopes.
