Based at a remote greenfield site the port development project presented the engineering team with a range of challenges including;
RPS worked closely with the client team in the early stages of the project to ensure the chosen solution met the needs of the project in a cost effective manner whilst addressing key local physical constraints.
A key aspect for the development of an economic solution was the optimisation of the 5 km dredged approach channel. RPS undertook significant computational hydraulic model to ensure the alignment of the channel encouraged ‘self flushing’ during the monsoon season to minimise maintenance dredging whilst maintaining navigational safety.
Adoption of an optimised access road alignment also assisted in minimising the extent of excavations required while ensuring efficient vehicle access on steep slopes.
