Global Response Excellence: RPS Provides Support for Oil Spill off Lima, Peru
In January of 2023, a significant oil spill took place off the north coast of Lima, Peru, impacting numerous beaches and coastlines. The government of Peru formally declared an environmental emergency and reached out to the United Nations as well as governments and organizations around the world for assistance and advice.
Response
After the spill happened, Lamor, who was contracted by Repsol as one of the service providers to provide equipment and services in the response and cleanup of the oil spill, engaged RPS to support response efforts through daily forecasts modeling. RPS’ OILMAP, which has been the main modeling tool for this support, has the ability to integrate satellite detections and spill observations into the models using a user-drawn or SHP file polygon.
Modelling
Through the modeling done by RPS, Lamor was able to assess the probable extent of the affected coastlines, plan their aerial observations and send crews to specific areas to conduct shoreline clean-up assessments or offshore containment and removal operations

RPS provides an active 24/7 response modeling service with clients ranging from major oil and gas operators to government agencies responsible for Tier 3 spill intervention and management. RPS’s technical staff has also the capability to support and assess the level of oil spill preparedness for companies and agencies offering Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), Oil Spill Response Plans (OSRP) and training, including ICS and IMO model courses on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation.
