Shaping development across the capital, the new London Plan (NLP) will play a huge role in the city's success and prosperity. It comes at a critical time post-Brexit with London looking to maintain its global position, whilst also addressing the impact of the pandemic.
So what does the plan entail?
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has declared that the plan "represents a step-change approach and serves as a blueprint for our city's future development and sustainable, inclusive growth."ย ย
The NLP identifies 47 Opportunity Areas (OAs) as significant locations with development capacity to accommodate new housing, commercial developments, and infrastructure. It also outlines 52,000 new homes to be built each year, 95 percent of construction and demolition waste to be reused, recycled, or recovered, and all major developments to meet net zero carbon.
But it has also been criticised for being too long and outdated, with the NLP not providing all of the necessary information required to implement its policies.ย ย
