The Sustainable Futures Forum brought together a diverse group of industry leaders, policymakers, and sustainability experts to explore the evolving relationship between business and nature.
The panel featured Hing Kin Lee – Vice President of Nature at NextEnergy Capital, Kathryn Deegan – Vice President of Investment Banking at RBC Capital Markets, and Mike Barker, our Operational Director of Ecology. Together, they tackled the pressing challenges and emerging opportunities in sustainable business practices, offering valuable insights on how companies can integrate ecological considerations into their strategies.
In our latest insights article, Mike shares his key takeaways from the panel discussion.
For companies to take sustainability seriously, they need to understand and articulate their impact on nature. Mike stressed the importance of building a clear, compelling narrative around an organisation’s ecological footprint – not just for compliance but to foster genuine engagement.
“Businesses must go beyond ticking regulatory boxes. They need to embed ecological responsibility into their DNA, making it part of their long-term value creation.”
Sustainability challenges are not limited by borders, and neither should the solutions. Mike highlighted the value of looking beyond local practices and adopting proven strategies from other regions.
“We should actively seek out lessons from countries that lead in ecological management, like the Netherlands, where innovative water management is at the core of their infrastructure.”
By sharing knowledge across industries and geographies, businesses can accelerate their sustainability efforts and implement more effective solutions.
Industries that rely heavily on natural resources face tougher challenges when it comes to sustainability. However, Mike pointed out that these businesses have an opportunity to turn ecological responsibility into a competitive advantage.
By proactively addressing environmental impacts, businesses can attract capital investment and build resilience against future regulatory and market shifts.
Sustainable practices aren’t just good for the planet – they also make financial sense. Investors and stakeholders are increasingly favouring companies that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability.

The panel also explored emerging trends in how businesses are engaging with nature. Mike underscored that the shift isn’t just about compliance – it’s about building a long-term, resilient business strategy.
“Sustainability isn’t a nice-to-have – it’s a must-have. Companies that embed ecological considerations into their operations will be the ones that thrive in the future.”
The conversation at the Sustainable Futures Forum made one thing clear: Businesses must take a proactive role in protecting and restoring nature. By understanding their impact, collaborating across industries, and embracing sustainable strategies, companies can drive meaningful change.
Our team are committed to helping organisations navigate this shift – ensuring a sustainable balance between economic and ecological considerations.
