Birmingham is growing, and fast. Housing delivery is exceeding forecasts, Curzon Street Station and High Speed 2 construction are well underway, and the 2022 Commonwealth Games are taking place this year. But is this growth being experienced by all sectors in the city?
Central Birmingham has seen retail reduction, accelerated by the pandemic. There's a lack of high-quality, available employment land which has restricted the delivery of larger industrial and logistics facilities. And there's a big challenge that exists with low levels of affordable housing delivery, high levels of unemployment, and ongoing homelessness.
There is a need for more to be done to deliver affordable family housing, and to support skills development for young people. Will the Government play a supportive role in the devolution of fiscal powers to the City, and help drive its ambitions forward?
