Under-Budget and Ahead of Schedule

RPS – in a joint venture with Roughan & O’Donavan Engineers – was appointed to design the M8 Cullahill to Cashel Road Improvement Scheme by SRB Ltd, a joint venture between Sisk and Roadbridge, two of Ireland’s largest contractors. The completed project was recently delivered under-budget and seven months ahead of schedule.
The €435m scheme consists of 40km of motorway with 11km of ancillary roads and 78 structures – including four grade-separated junctions, 21 road bridges and seven river bridges. It forms part of the upgrade of the entire N8 National Primary route from Cork to Dublin – and is one of the longest sections of the motorway ever opened in Ireland.
Bypassing four towns, the new motorway is expected to take at least 20 minutes off the journey time between Cork and Dublin.
The scheme, which was procured by Kilkenny County Council as a target cost, design and build contract, was initially scheduled for completion in July 2009 – but it actually opened in December 2008. The project design was managed by RPS Dublin, drawing key expertise from other parts of the RPS Group in Ireland – including water, structures, landscaping and environmental assessment.
RPS, as designers for the design & build consortium, performed a crucial role in the successful delivery of this key piece of Irish national infrastructure.
