RPS was the shining star at the recent 2014 New South Wales Spatial Excellence Awards, winning two awards.
We took out the People and Community Award for 3D terrestrial laser scanning of the Hammerhead Crane in Sydney Harbour, and the Technical Excellence Award for North West Rail Link.
The iconic Hammerhead Crane in Garden Island in Sydney Harbour is one of only six such cranes built in the world. RPS captured more than 100 scans of the structure to produce a photorealistic 3D point cloud as a means of archival recording of the structure ahead of its removal.
Built in 1951, the iconic 61-metre structure was set up for the removal of the twin 18 inch gun barbettes (armoured cylinders protecting revolving turrets on a warship) from the English battleships of the period.
The Technical Excellence Award recognises the innovative solutions RPS (the former InSites team) employed as principal survey and spatial information contractor for the $8.3 billion North West Rail Link (NWRL) – Australia's largest public transport infrastructure project currently under construction.
Over 24 months, RPS was responsible for the collection, coordination, management and electronic delivery of all spatially related topographic, cadastral, property and infrastructure information to an extensive range of government agencies, project design engineers, planning consultants and project stakeholders.
A project director was permanently installed within the project office, while a resource base of up to 40 people in specialist teams was established in the RPS office to deliver the integrated and highly innovative solutions required to satisfy each element of the scope.
RPS is proud to report that after 45,000 recorded man hours on the project, operating under our Integrated Quality and Safety systems, we hold a scorecard that reflects zero quality and safety non-conformances.
Both projects will now be in the running for National Awards announced early next year.
