RPS marine scientist represents Australia at UNESCO global workshop
Sydney-based benthic ecologist, Dr Rachel Przeslawski, an expert on environmental impacts on marine ecosystems is representing Australia on the world stage at a prestigious global workshop of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) of UNESCO. The event aims to improve the European and global observations of marine life.
Global collaboration to improve ocean monitoring
RPS Senior Principal Marine Scientist, Dr Rachel Przeslawski, is currently attending the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) Biology & Ecosystems Panel of Experts, as an expert on marine invertebrates, joining leading scientists from around the world.
Held in Sopot Poland, the workshop focuses on Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs) related to biology and ecosystems, which play a crucial role in improving global ocean monitoring.
As a recognised expert in marine benthic ecology, Rachel says, “It’s an honour to be part of these important discussions.”

Hosted by UNESCO’s GOOS and the European Union Horizon Europe BioEcoOcean project, the event runs from 3 to 6 February 2025 at the Institute of Oceanology Polish Academy of Sciences.

A highly accomplished benthic ecologist, Dr Przeslawski, specialises in offshore, coastal and intertidal marine surveys. She has led major research programs on marine seismic impacts and biodiversity baselines and coordinated a national collaboration of more than 220 scientists to develop Australia’s marine sampling standards.
Her participation in this high-profile workshop underscores RPS’ commitment to global ocean science leadership, and the team looks forward to applying insights from her trip.
