New Riegl VQ-1560 II-S LiDAR Scanner for RPS in Australia

RPS now has the most advanced aerial LiDAR scanning technology in the Australian market, taking delivery of a new Riegl VQ-1560 II-S Dual LiDAR Waveform Processing Scanning System this week.
Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is method of mapping that allows high levels of detail to be recorded about environmental features such as topography, vegetation, buildings and infrastructure.
Fixed to a light aircraft, aerial LiDAR scanners shoot laser light pulses at the ground and measure their return to develop a detailed model of built and natural features.
Using aerial LiDAR capture and processing, RPS’ Australian-based aerial mapping team supports clients to record detailed spatial datasets that inform decision-making about development and environmental resource management.
The new Riegl scanner provides a significant leap forward for LiDAR capture efficiency and data density with the capability to achieve more than 2.66 million measurements per second on the ground, and ultra-high point densities of up to 60 points per square metre.
Investing in the equipment gives RPS the flexibility to complete ultra-wide area mapping at high altitudes–a key benefit when mapping large land areas for forestry and agricultural land uses.
“The Riegl VQ-1560 II-S is the most advanced scanning system in the Australian market, not just in terms of the amount of detail that can be captured (point density), but also the flexibility it offers,” says RPS Australian Mapping and GIS Manager, Ivan Salhus.
“We can now offer higher point density datasets when our clients need–for example in forestry where land managers will be able to assess overall canopy and tree growth in more detail than has ever been possible before.
“On jobs where super high point density isn’t necessary, clients still benefit as we now have the ability to complete capture over large areas far more rapidly. It’s a win win,” he said.
