Dr Mike Shaw chairs steering group for Northern Ireland’s decarbonisation strategy
Dr Mike Shaw, UK and Ireland Operating Unit Leader and CEO for RPS, A Tetra Tech company, recently joined Northern Ireland’s Economy Minister, Dr Caoimhe Archibald, to launch a new report focused on decarbonising the built environment by 2050.
The Decarbonisation of the NI Built Environment report was commissioned by Matrix NI, an industry-led panel that advises government and informs academia and industry on the commercial exploitation of research and development, and science and technology.
Mike is a member of the Matrix NI panel and chaired the steering group overseeing the report, which comprises 14 industry leaders, experts, and stakeholders from a wide range of public and private sectors and universities. The team provided valuable input into scenario planning, exploring four possible scenarios that illustrate how political and economic conditions will influence the pace and success of decarbonisation over the next 25 years.
The report identifies strategies, technologies, and case studies that could help Northern Ireland reduce both operational and embodied carbon emissions from homes, workplaces, and infrastructure by 2050.
It highlights the importance of retrofitting existing buildings, increasing energy efficiency standards, and investing in skills to support low-carbon technologies and construction methods.
Mike commented: “Northern Ireland has the potential to harness its unique strengths, leverage its geographic position, and lead by example in the global effort to combat climate change."
