Award for Birmingham Children’s Hospital

06 Oct 2008

RPS architects have been highly commended with a CIAT award for technical excellence (Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists) for their design of the Burns Centre and Expanded Education Centre at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

The award consisted of a plaque to be displayed within the building to recognise RPS’ technical excellence in the detailed design for the project, with special regard to the high humidity and high temperature specialist burns operating theatre, along with the future-proofing of the building to allow a roof-mounted helipad to be installed in the future, along with the innovative use of materials within a conservation area.

RPS chose to donate the prize money to the hospital’s charity fund “The Red Balloon Appeal” to assist the hospital with its future development plans.

The judges commented that “This building merits its award because of the technology encompassed in its design and its use of materials.” The judges were of the opinion that “the design achieves its aims – and the pioneering use of materials both internally and externally provides an impressive and vibrant building.”
