Air Travel – Important Planning Approvals
Two important planning applications aimed at increasing the number of flights and air passengers accessing London and the South-East of England were approved in October. Both owe much of their success to RPS – following our assistance to BAA in securing planning permission for T5 at Heathrow.
Newham Council approved an application for London City Airport flights to increase by 50% to 120,000/year – and the Government removed the 25 million/year limit on passengers using Stansted's existing single runway, allowing it scope to grow to around 35 million/year.
For London City Airport, RPS acted as the Airport’s strategic advisors and planning consultants, coordinating the application to Newham Council, and consulting with neighbouring boroughs, the Greater London Authority, the London Development Agency and other stakeholders. The Environmental Impact Assessment, Health Impact Assessment and advice on waste and sustainability were also provided by RPS.
For the Stansted Public Inquiry, RPS – as strategic planning advisors to BAA – provided advice and assisted in the preparation and submission of the plans to make best use of the existing single runway. RPS also provided an expert witness who appeared at the Inquiry on behalf of BAA. For the next phase of Stansted’s expansion – the proposed second runway – RPS will provide evidence on behalf of BAA at the Public Inquiry, which is scheduled to start early in 2009.
