Hexavalent Chromium Analysis

Hexavalent chromium compounds pose a significant health hazard within specific industries. They can start with something as small as an irritation in the nose and respiratory tract, through to kidney and lung damage due to repeated exposure. With the right precautions and with regular and robust exposure monitoring, you can ensure that your employees’ contact with this carcinogen is reduced, and their health and well-being is maintained.

Hexavalent chromium exposure

Although chromium has many different forms, hexavalent chromium has the most significant effects on a worker’s health. These compounds are used and found in many processes that include the production and use of stainless steel (welding and cutting), hard chrome plating, electroplating and producing catalysts in the manufacturing industry.

Hexavalent chromium can enter our bodies through breathing in dust, fumes or mist, through direct skin contact with solutions, or ingestion when you have chromium dust on your hands. You may remember the 2000 film ‘Erin Brockovich’. This was based on the true story of the community of Hinkley, California suffering the effects of hexavalent chromium contaminating their drinking water.

Our expertise in monitoring and analysis

We understand that your employees’ occupational health is important to you, which is why we make sure to maintain a high standard of service and to support our clients as much as possible.

You can reduce and prevent your employees’ over-exposure to hazardous materials like hexavalent chromium by implementing a regular workplace exposure monitoring programme. This can prevent long-term health effects, the consequences of neglecting workers’ occupational hygiene, and large fines from the HSE. At RPS, we take pride in offering a quality service and analysis, completed by our qualified laboratory staff with decades of exposure monitoring experience.

We can provide hexavalent chromium analysis as well as the supply of any relevant media for sampling. We have the capability to do both the MDHS 52/4 (PDF) and the NIOSH 7600 (PDF) methods to suit our clients’ requirements. In addition to this, we also offer the option to urine test your workforce for chromium levels, should you ever require it.

If you are not trained or not as confident in the sampling processes, our team of dedicated Occupational Hygiene consultants can ensure effective, high-quality monitoring and analysis. If you wish to make an enquiry or have any further questions about how we can assist you, please don’t hesitate to contact a member of our Sales Team.
