Sydney CBD and South East Light Rail

As Sydney transforms its urban transport network, RPS is supporting the environmentally responsible development of light rail for the CBD and inner south-eastern suburbs.

Challenge

Currently under construction, the Sydney CBD and South East Light Rail’s 12km route will feature 19 stops, extending from Circular Quay along George Street to Central Station, Surry Hills to Moore Park, Kensington and Kingsford to Randwick. A connector of commercial, residential and education precincts, the project represents a major enhancement to public transport in areas of the inner south-east that are currently serviced only by buses.

Solution

With extensive construction works to occur across multiple districts, communities and environments, the right approach to approvals, consultation and compliance is a critical success factor for Sydney’s light rail initiative. Not only is good environmental planning ensuring local ecosystems and values are protected, it's also helping to safeguard the project’s reputation and build positive engagement with communities and customers.

RPS environmental specialists were engaged as embedded members of the Transport for NSW (TfNSW) CBD and South East Light Rail team from 2016 to 2018. Reporting directly to TfNSW’s Senior Manager, Environment and Planning, our people have taken a leading role on the progression of all environmental approvals and construction site activities.

Drawing on experience gained from work on region-shaping infrastructure projects all over Australia, our team members supported the project’s success through environmental management and risk mitigation, environmental planning and compliance documentation, stakeholder engagement and reference group consultation.

Delivered within the context of challenging approvals frameworks and environmental constraints, best-practice environmental management and compliance is a key success factor for the CBD and South East Light Rail project, as is the quality of information provided to regulators and other stakeholders. Our team members have worked ensured that environmental management performance is maintained and that compliance reporting is delivered in a timely fashion.
