Sunshine Coast LiDAR

With significant ongoing growth projected across the region's housing, infrastructure, tourism and commercial sectors, Sunshine Coast Regional Council (SCRC) has turned to RPS for specialist data to support its local planning efforts.


Our team undertook a comprehensive LiDAR mapping exercise for the entire Sunshine Coast LGA - collecting the largest aerial spatial dataset ever recorded about the region. Collected using a LiDAR sensor attached to fixed-wing aircraft, spatial data relating to around 2,200 km2 of land area was captured at a nominal density of four outgoing laser pulses per square metre in a full waveform format.

This method allowed our team to produce information at up to twice the precision of a previous LiDAR dataset captured for the area in 2009, and with substantially more above ground information than has ever been available in the past. The LiDAR dataset and derived products produced by RPS now form an important resource for Sunshine Coast Regional Council when it comes to the successful and sustainable management of the LGA.

With a diversity of environments and ecosystems to be monitored – from beaches and estuaries to native forests, agricultural land and inner-urban locations – SCRC draws on this comprehensive suite of information to assist with climate change resilience, water security planning, disaster risk mitigation, environmental monitoring, infrastructure planning and more.

LiDAR data also forms a critical baseline against which SCRC can measure environmental changes, and the flexibility of the raw information means RPS can assist Council to manipulate it for new uses in the future, such as 3D modelling for project visualisation.
