Norcem Carbon Capture and Storage project

The cement industry accounts for 5-7% of global CO2 emissions annually. Granted Government funding in 2020, Norcem will build a full-scale carbon capture and storage facility at their factory in Brevik. The aim of this project will be to reduce emissions by 400.000 tonnes of CO2 every year, accounting for almost 1% of the total emissions in Norway.

This project is considered one of the largest environmental projects ever initiated within Norwegian industry, and is of great importance not only for Norcem, but also for Norway and the EU in terms of reaching climate goals.

The cement industry

The cement industry accounts for 5-7% of global CO2 emissions every year. Considering population growth and increasing urbanization there are few signs that consumption of concrete as a building material will decrease, and therefore, increases the potential for this industry to make a significant impact on the climate.

Norcem, owned by HeidelbergCement, is the only producer of cement in Norway with factories located in Brevik and Kjรธpsvik. For years they have been front-runners in the field of researching and testing of carbon capture solutions. In 2020, the government of Norway granted them financial support to build a full-scale carbon capture and storage chain, including a carbon capture plant at Norcemโ€™s facility in Brevik. Liquid CO2 will be transported away from the site by ship for permanent storage under the seabed.

Project Management

A project management team from RPS in Norway (Metier OEC) is working closely with the business management in Norcem - as an organization primarily focused on operations, they needed a specialized project management team to support the successful delivery of this project.

Our team will continue to deliver a wide range of services including planning, cost control, contract and change, interface, quality and risk, and HSE over the duration of the project.

This is considered a highly unique project and aligns with our vision of supporting in the necessary journey towards a greener society.
