Do valuable, meaningful work

We know that the world needs to deploy many more renewables projects and that accelerating the rate of development is vital. However, as this happens, there’ll be challenges – and one of them is making sure that these projects are developed responsibly.

Renewable energy focussed careers at RPS give you the opportunity to get involved in the drive for net-zero. That means direct involvement in developing onshore and offshore renewable energy projects, but also in ensuring they’re developed in a sustainable, responsible way. And this isn’t just limited to senior roles – it’s a part of the job for every level.

Jon's story

My first 100 Days at RPS_Jon Alsop.jpg (1)
How was your onboarding experience at RPS?

Onboarding was efficient and easy. All of my questions were answered and everything was very straightforward. My line manager has been readily available and approachable, and so have my planning and environment colleagues.

From the outset, I have also been involved in leading a number of bids for new projects. This has allowed me to better get to know who does what, and what services and skills we have to offer. The weekly updates and news from the senior directors have also been very helpful in understanding the wider business picture and strategy at RPS.

Some processes and terminology have taken a little while to pick up but I have been well supported and made very welcome. The flexible working arrangements available at RPS are also really helpful.

What solar projects have you been involved in?

From the first week I have been involved in supporting live solar projects, and in preparing bids for solar work – a number of which have already been successful.

The solar work includes Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) as well as those progressed under the Town & Country Planning Act. It’s great to be involved with this scale of renewable work.

I have supported Development Consent Order (DCO) projects before, and I have also led solar development projects, but this is my first experience of the two being combined. The projects are ambitious in scale, and I am excited to be working on them.

What experiences have you had at RPS so far to provide sustainable solutions for client projects?

I have been able to make meaningful contributions to a number of project designs and strategies, including solar, energy from waste, housing development and energy storage.

In bidding for, and winning, new work I have also been able to demonstrate to clients that the integrated and multi-disciplinary services we offer are able to make a positive and pragmatic contribution to their requirements, and that sustainable solutions and making complex easy are key to our approach.

How do your colleagues support greater collaboration?

There is a strong network of experienced development planners and environmental specialists at RPS, and a good level of resource to support the workload.

The level of communication across the team is strong, with people sharing information and issues, and asking questions. We are all able to contribute and help develop the more junior staff – and the dialogue is not hierarchical. We actively come together at regular points, as a team, and share ideas and opportunities, as well as discussing resources and deadlines. We have also been able to socialise on a number of occasions over the past three months, which is great for building team spirit, understanding and collaboration.

I have also been involved with the solar marketing campaign. It’s been brilliant to be able to contribute to the way we promote ourselves and develop relationships with existing and potential clients.

Looking back over your first 100 days, what has been the highlight?

I feel valued, and the team environment is exactly what I was hoping for. The balance of flexible working is right and the projects are interesting and challenging.

How does RPS support and encourage career development?

I have already had the opportunity to identify key areas of focus that I am planning to formalise as objectives and integrate into my Career Development Plan.

There is also the opportunity to provide mentoring/coaching to others at RPS, in addition to the support provided as part of day-to-day line management. I’m looking forward to working with colleagues to do this.

What are you hoping to achieve in your career at RPS?

I’m keen to progress in my role as a Director and experienced planner by leading, supporting and delivering a wide range of development and infrastructure projects that make a positive contribution to the needs of communities and the economy, whilst protecting and enhancing the environment.

What would you say to others considering joining RPS?

Do it – you won’t regret it!

RPS has a fantastic community of professionals and support staff, who work extremely hard to deliver our client’s needs and make a positive contribution to the world around us.

Our corporate responsibility

At RPS we have defined our purpose to create shared value by solving problems that matter to a complex, urbanising and resource-scarce world.
