Cracking down on dust

According to the HSE’s Chief Inspector around 100 times as many workers die from diseases caused or made worse by their work than are killed in construction accidents, [see article]. This demonstrates that across the construction industry, more controls are needed to help protect workers.

The HSE have created a new initiative to target construction firms across the UK to check their health standards are up to scratch, the inspection will focus on respiratory risks and occupational lung disease, checking the measures companies have in place to protect their employees from hazardous dust such as, asbestos, silica and wood, the aim is to help improve the health of workers within the construction industry.

The construction initiative will be supported by the HSE ‘Dustbuster’ campaign which will review the risk to colleagues in various work environments, and the controls in place to ensure their workers are being protected, [see article].
