RPS supports planning approval for catalytic development at Hervey Bay

Visitors to Hervey Bay will have soon have new waterfront accommodation options with a major mixed-use development—Marina Square—given the green light by Fraser Coast Regional Council.

RPS’ Queensland Planning team has been working with project partners Hervey Bay Boat Club and Club Property Solutions on this transformational project for the Fraser Coast region, the centrepiece of which will be a new $60 million, 4-star hotel for the Urangan Harbour precinct.

“Hervey Bay has always been one of Australia’s favourite holiday destinations, with people drawn to the region for whale watching, beautiful beaches, great weather and to experience World Heritage-listed Fraser Island,” said RPS Technical Director for Planning, Simon Pollock.

“It’s also a drawcard for those looking for a regional tree change, and Fraser Coast Regional Council has invested heavily in creating a long-term vision for the city’s harbourfront. Hervey Bay is also a significant regional commercial centre and all of these factors are driving the demand for high-quality short-stay accommodation.”

The Marina Square project will feature a 17-level, international-standard hotel with 144 guest suites, all enjoying panoramic views across the marina and Great Sandy Strait to Fraser Island. A second subsequent stage (also now Council-approved) will see the development of 120 apartments across two towers along with significant open space and common recreation areas. Planning is still underway for further stages of the Marina Square project. 

“This approval is an exciting step towards the realisation of everyone’s vision for Urangan Harbour as a focal point for Hervey Bay. Importantly, it will be a place that adds to the experience for visiting tourists and residents, while supporting the local waterfront industry,” said Simon.

The Queensland Government has recognised the initiative’s importance for the local economy, naming it a regionally significant project for the Fraser Coast. Construction is anticipated to begin in mid-2022.
