Carl Davies a finalist in Western Australian water awards

22 Oct 2020

RPS Principal Hydrologist Carl Davies is a finalist in this year’s Australian Water Association Awards for Western Australia (WA).

He will compete with the industry’s best for top honours in the 'Water Professional of the Year' category.

With more than 20 years’ experience in hydrogeological investigations and urban water management, the nomination is recognition for Carl’s significant contributions to sustainable water management — both through his work at RPS and ongoing research into alternative water supply mechanisms.

Carl is currently completing a PhD research thesis on how subsoil drainage can be used as an alternative water supply and reduce the need for imported fill in new developments. His work is of particular interest to government water agencies and developers in his home state of WA, where groundwater is a major source of supply in urban areas.

Carl Davies to compete for top honours in this year's Australian Water Association Awards (WA).

Over four years, Carl has monitored two urban sites in the Perth region to develop one of the most comprehensive urban groundwater and subsurface drainage data sets ever developed for the area. His analysis included the development of an urban recharge model to estimate the percentage of subsurface drainage water is attributable to recharge (rainfall and irrigation) and how much from groundwater.

The research has been applied to feasibility studies and models for the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER), Water Corporation WA, the Cooperative Research Centre for Water Sensitive Cities (CRC), and a number of major development firms.

The winners of this year’s awards will be announced at a ceremony in Perth on Friday 23 October. Good luck to Carl and the rest of this year’s finalists!
