£1bn town regeneration plans take two steps further

17 Jan 2020

Working on behalf of the client Mace, our planning team have submitted a major planning application covering 14.5 acres of Stevenage town centre.

Known as SG1, the proposal will seek to significantly transform the town centre to compliment new developments that are already underway at the north of Queensway and on the Town Square. SG1 will provide more than 1,800 high-quality residential dwellings, as well as 37,700sq ft of retail and commercial space, a new public square, park, a Public Services Hub and a new primary school.

The central theme for the masterplan proposal is the creation of new greener spaces and to increase biodiversity across Stevenage town centre.

Our planning team has coordinated the submission of the hybrid application and led on discussions with the Local Planning Authority to deliver a phased scheme which meets the Council’s regeneration aims and ambitions for the town centre.

Matt Brewer, Director at RPS said; “We are delighted that following a proactive and productive pre-application process with the Council, stakeholders, consultees and the business and resident community that this application has now been submitted to the Council. It will deliver much needed regeneration and provides a deliverable consent that will act as a catalyst for further investment in the town.”

The consultation process is currently under way with a decision anticipated in Q2 2020.
