Temporary Works Design

RPS has provided temporary works design on numerous large civil and structural engineering projects.

RPS has a proactive design philosophy giving careful consideration for health and safety, cost and the environmental impact of the design solution. We design feasible and practical temporary work solutions that can be left as part of the permanent works or readily removed after their function has been successfully completed. We use the latest design techniques such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) in optimising both temporary and permanent works solutions.

Our temporary works design services include:

Retaining structures and scaffolding support structures

Falsework, formwork & scaffolding support structures

Propping, pinning, underpinning & shoring for building refurbishments

Access platforms

Slope and embankment stability and retention

Condition surveys & construction monitoring

Basement & underground car parking construction

Surface water treatment systems

Project Supervisor Design Process (PSDP)

Temporary trench support and sheetpiling

Temporary access tracks and hardstandings

Our civil and structural engineering teams collaborate with other team members and disciplines to provide design solutions that are fully coordinated with the permanent works.

Crofton Developments

RPS is the structural engineer for the design of the highly acclaimed landmark Harbour Square Development, a mixed-use development of commercial offices, retail units and residential apartments on a confined urban site overlooking Dublin Bay.

The €60m development has 5 interlinked blocks with a shared 2-storey underground basement car parking and concrete podium. The development on a 2.2 acre site comprises 35,000m2 of 6-storey commercial offices, retail and 118 residential apartments and landscaped plaza area.

The 19th century listed protected Harbour Lodge and Town Hall share the site, and the DART railway runs in close proximity. RPS structural engineers were responsible for the design and provided full time site supervision. Our temporary works services included design of a combination of steel sheet piles and contiguous concrete piles to facilitate the deep basement construction, whilst supporting these existing buildings. Our team also carried out condition surveys and monitoring during excavations.

Sierra Support Services – Temporary Access Arrangements

Sierra Support Services – Temporary Access Arrangements

Sierra Support Services

RPS has carried out the design of temporary access arrangements required as part of the high voltage line upgrades for Sierra Support Services.

The temporary access arrangements included stone fill temporary access tracks for heavy plant, and temporary hardstandings to act as construction and lifting platforms. The temporary works design involved ground improvement techniques to traverse peat and soft ground, including the design of bogmat platforms to minimise impact on sensitive ground.
