Cathedral Green

Cathedral Green

Derby City Council

Following a two stage national design competition hosted by Derby City Council, RPS were appointed as part of a multi-disciplinary project team to provide a new bridge link across the River Derwent and a vibrant, sustainable open space, including a waterfront amphitheatre style events space and an art feature within the former Mill Race.

The concepts for the bridge and open space take their inspiration from the local textiles industry and the fast flowing waters of the River Derwent. The open space is designed to reinforce pedestrian routes to the town centre, provide an attractive riverside event space, compliment the setting of the new bridge link, and create a vibrant, sustainable, inclusive place to meet friends using the highest quality materials and construction methods.

Using AutoCAD and Artisan specialist landscape design computer software, we provided co-ordinated setting out details, designed a soft landscape scheme to discharge planning conditions, and designed low maintenance hard landscape construction details to Local Planning Authority approval.

Cathedral Green has become a key public space and a major component of Derby City Centre green space.  The high profile space was ‘Highly commended’ by Derby Civic Society in February 2009.
