Haulbowline Island East Tip Remediation Project

Haulbowline Island East Tip Remediation Project

Cork County Council

Haulbowline Island in Cork was the location of Ireland’s only steelworks which operated between 1939 and 2001. Waste from the steel production process was deposited on an area of reclaimed foreshore, which became known as the East Tip.

RPS was appointed in 2012 to provide environmental consultancy services for the preparation of an EIS, waste licence application and planning application for the remediation of East Tip and its transformation into a public recreational amenity. Planning was approved by An Bord Pleanála and a waste licence was subsequently granted by the EPA.

In September 2015, RPS was awarded the contract to deliver the remediated site. Site clearance and advance works contracts are currently underway. The procurement process for the remediation works contractor is well advanced and it is expected that a contractor will be appointed in Q2 2017 and the work completed in Q3/Q4 2018.
