RPS provided the mechanical and electrical design for a 12,000 sq. m. new offices in four connected wings to support administration, marketing and research functions with ancillary facilities for ICON, an international clinical research company.
The global headquarters of the organisation is located in the IDA, South Dublin Business Park and this includes such functions as quality assurance, finance, business development and human resources.
In addition, clinical research management teams are located on the site, comprising project managers and clinical research staff who set up, monitor and administer research programmes for major pharmaceutical company clients.
The site also contains ICON’s European centre for processing the data generated on all of its clinical trials in Europe and the rest of the world, excluding the US.
In order to ensure an optimum working environment utilising narrow plan buildings, the extension is designed in four blocks which run north-south. The office blocks are connected to a main concourse which has a fully glazed roof and is connected to the existing building for almost its full length and this concourse is now the primary organising element of circulation linking all the buildings and forming the heart of the complex. To enhance this area as the heart of the building, a new cafeteria is located at ground floor level.
The project involved the full mechanical and electrical installation of the new offices, a crèche, data centre and canteen area. The installation included medium voltage transformers, new site generator, a fully air conditioned facility and lighting control systems.
