RPS as sub-consultant to Suters Architects, was engaged by Project Services in conjunction with Queensland Health, to create a landscape treatment for the Chronic Disease Clinic as part of the Thursday Island Hospital Redevelopment.
The hospital is the only health care centre in the entire Torres Strait area, which includes 15 island communities scattered over a geographic area of 48,000km2. RPS worked closely with the local community to ensure the landscape theme carried a sense of ‘home away from home’ for patients and their families. The hard and soft landscape elements used were in keeping with the unique island cultures and lifestyle. Our team incorporated local materials, forms and endemic plant species.
