RPS was initially appointed by LandCorp to undertake the preparation of the development plan for the South Hedland City Centre.
The vision, developed in consultation with the community and key stakeholders, including private enterprise, focuses on the re-establishment of an activity node through the activation of a new main street.
Elements of built form, streetscape and civic/cultural space were all considered to ensure a quality outcome reflective of the essence of South Hedland and the Pilbara Region.
The new city centre vision focuses on the re-establishment of a ‘main street’ drawing on government investment in the regional hospital, existing retailing and new medium density housing. Elements of built form, streetscape and civic/cultural space have all been considered to ensure a quality outcome reflective of South Hedland and the Pilbara.
Improved connections for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic from the existing South Hedland development pattern has been an important part of the design of the City Centre. This not only improves access to the Town Centre, but also between existing neighbourhoods.
