Monitoring Buoys for Mulroy Bay Aquaculture
Donegal coastline.

Mulroy Bay’s aquaculture is benefiting from the protection of a €345,000 real time monitoring scheme during construction of the Mulroy Bay Bridge1 . RPS is project-managing the scheme, which uses four monitoring buoys to measure levels of suspended solids and oxygen entering the bay.

Mulroy Bay is a sheltered marine inlet approximately 12 km long in north -west County Donegal and lies between the Rosguill and Fanad peninsulas. The 5-span high level bridge is currently under construction and is situated near Boathill Bay, at a location referred to as the Second Narrows, an approx 280 metres wide channel that separates the townland of Rawros from the townland of Leatbeg on the Fanad peninsula. The channel has strong tidal currents of 3.5 to 5 knots.

The geological strata of this part of coastline lends itself ideally to the aquacultural industry, and Mulroy Bay is home to a number of salmon farming and scallop spat collection businesses2 . North Water is a designated collection spot for pecten maximus (Great Scallop) spat3 . Local aquaculture businesses including Marine Harvests Ireland have expressed great satisfaction in the monitoring project installed by Donegal County Council.

Mulroy Bay’s CLAMS group and Donegal County Council have set trigger levels for the monitoring buoys which will signify an alarm condition – whereby automatic text messages will notify fish and sealife farmers immediately, as well as the County Council – enabling necessary action to be taken at once. RPS is updating CLAMS and the County Council, at monthly meetings, on monitoring results and progress, along with the bridge construction progress. The monitoring will continue throughout the construction of the Mulroy Bay Bridge until the bridge is completed and operational.
