Arcelor’s prestigious new extension (worth 90m PLN złoty, equivalent to £18.5m or €25m) to a steel rolling mill is nearing completion. Designed by RPS’ Warsaw office, the facility is located close to the main Warsaw to Gdansk highway at Zoliborz and has remained operational throughout the new development’s construction and fit-out.
The extension to the existing heavy engineering facility is key to the client’s plans for business growth and it was vital that the design team fully understood their operations, processes and flows. Through extensive discussions and considered detailed design, RPS was able to reduce the preliminary estimate of 5,000 tonnes of steel required by 1,500 tonnes. The completed facility will have six cranes, each with a 25 tonne load capacity, and extensive piling was required on the site to support these high loads.
The steel rolling mill is linked to the existing facility and comprises 26,000m2 ground floor space plus an additional 9,000m2 at mezzanine level, which required complex architectural and engineering design integration. The manufacturing facility is connected with other adjacent buildings by a railway line crossing the site, and existing units are being refurbished to provide canteen, shower and welfare facilities for staff.
The exterior was designed using simple, clean lines in a contemporary style with careful landscaping. The facility incorporates special acoustic protection to walls, roof and roof vents to minimise potential noise emissions that could affect nearby residential areas. The roof is fitted with 8% rooflights in operational areas, and the interior benefits from extensive open space.
