A1/N1 Cross Border Road Project
The A1/N1 Newry to Dundalk Link Road is the largest cross-border road project to date and forms a vital link in the main Dublin-Belfast corridor yielding far-reaching benefits for communities on both sides of the border (by providing a safe and efficient road). The project also provides a new section of the Euroroute E01 linking the major commercial seaports at Larne, Belfast, Dublin and Rosslare and the airports at Dublin and Belfast.
This cross-border design and build scheme runs between Cloghoge roundabout, south of Newry, and the Ballymascanlon interchange, north of Dundalk. The project, through difficult topography involves the design and construction of 13.5km of all-purpose 2-lane dual carriageway, three grade separated junctions, 11 principal structures (road, river and rail bridges), soft and contaminated ground geotechnical solutions and the realignment of approximately 6km of associated regional and county road. Construction commenced in July 2005.
