Swine Flu Support Case Study

Europe's largest provider of visual effects for the Film and Television industry, Double Negative Visual Effects, engaged RPS Business Healthcare when one of their employees was diagnosed with H1N1 Swine Flu.

Following their return to London from the USA, the employee concerned, and the Company, were given general advice on how to manage the condition by the Government health authorities, however, they both remained concerned that the advice received was not specific enough to meet their respective needs.

Therefore, with the aim of obtaining the best possible advice and support for the affected employee, and to also provide informed guidance to the rest of their workforce, Double Negative sought detailed advice from an Occupational Health Specialist at RPS. Our Occupational Health practitioners considered the specific issues raised by the employee, and provided specific practical advice, taking into account the latest information and guidance available to the medical profession. Our Doctors also responded to questions raised by other members of their workforce, which included concerns from those whose partners were pregnant; those who had very young children and those with elderly relatives.

When providing advice to managers at Double Negative, guidance was tailored to the specific circumstances, and the latest information available. The company found that the provision of the consultancy support, with informed expert advice, really made a difference, by addressing their concerns and those of their workforce, who felt reassured by the guidance provided.

It is important that employers are pro-active about the threat of the pandemic and consider the impact it may have upon their business and either people. Most organisations already have business continuity plans in place, however, it is sensible to review these arrangements and consider their effectiveness in the event of a medical emergency or pandemic.
