RPS Britain Health, Safety & Environment

The CRC Energy
Efficiency Scheme

Qualification criteria for the CRC Scheme were set against electricity consumption through Half Hourly Meters (HHMs) in the calendar year 2008 and organisations which consumed in excess of 6,000MWh (roughly equating to an energy bill of £500,000) are required to fully participate. Those organisations which consumed less than 6,000MWh will need to make an information disclosure. Participant organisations are required to monitor their energy use and purchase allowances, sold by the Government, for each tonne of CO, that they emit. The more an organisation emits, the more allowances it will need to buy to cover these emissions. These allowances must be surrendered at the end of each compliance year.

A league table will be produced to compare performance of all organisations in reducing emissions. Revenue raised by the scheme is ‘recycled’ back to participants and the position in the league table affects how much revenue is received by each organisation via a system of penalties and bonuses.
