RPS in Ireland

Currently the largest of its kind in Europe, the new state of the art Meadowbank Sports Arena is designed to bring sports facilities into the 21st Century.

RPS acted as Project Manager and Designer for the development of this new indoor sports arena and outdoor athletics track for Magherafelt District Council. The circa £6M development was handed over to the council by the Contractor in January 2008.

The facility can accommodate a wide variety of sports including athletics, hockey, soccer, Gaelic games, badminton and tennis. The indoor area consists of a five-lane 300m athletics track, a full-sized synthetic playing pitch and four multi-game mini-pitches, all of which can be used simultaneously. Outside there is a 400m six-lane synthetic-surfaced athletics track and facilities for field events including javelin, discus, shot putt, long/triple jump, high jump, and pole vault. The central area within the footprint of the running track has a sand based natural sports turf surface which can be used for both the athletics field throwing events and is of a suitable size for use as a full size soccer pitch.

The sports playing facilities are complimented with a range of spectator facilities with seating for 450 on a first floor gallery, which is accessible by wheelchair and special needs visitors.

The availability of such a large and flexible multi-functional sports facility provides the potential to host a wider range of public activities, regional sports competitions and other events.
