Evesham Vale Growers

RPS secured Planning permission for a vegetable feedstock Anaerobic Digestion Plant in Worcestershire.

The facility is located next to an existing 49,000m2 glasshouse and handles approximately 30,000tpa of vegetable feedstock generated from the farm holdings with maize being used to top up any shortage in supply.

The development provides a particularly sustainable solution to both waste management and energy production with the outputs from the Anaerobic Digestion process used to heat and light the Glasshouse development and the resulting carbon dioxide and digestate fed into the glasshouse to further improve tomato production.

Prior to preparing the AD application, RPS had submitted a planning application to regularise the recently built commercial Glasshouse.

Halstead Anaerobic Digestion Facility, Essex

Countrystyle Group Ltd

RPS undertook the Environmental Permit application for an Anaerobic Digestion Facility at the Bluebridge Industrial Estate.

The proposed facility was designed to process 45,000tpa of food waste and energy crop feedstocks for the generation of 13,000 tonnes of solid soil conditioner and 45,000 tonnes of liquid fuel fertiliser. The facility also has planning for an associated Combined Heat and Power facility.

The application included the preparation of the facilities Operating Techniques and Monitoring Plan which detailed how the facility would be operated once commissioned. As part of this, a summary of the Environmental Management System (EMS) to be in place was provided. An Odour Management Plan was also prepared as part of the EMS submission.

Further to this, an Environmental Risk Assessment was prepared in accordance with the Environment Agency H1 Guidance and covered Amenity and Accident risk, Air Quality, drainage, noise and vibration, odour and fugitive emissions.

RPS secured the environmental permits within the EA’s three month determination period.

Hoddesdon Sustainable Energy Facility

Trent Developments

RPS submitted the planning application and completed an Environmental Impact Assessment for a Sustainable Energy facility comprising an Advanced Thermal Treatment plant and an Anaerobic Digestion facility.

The Anaerobic Digestion facility will recover energy by utilising the gas generated to produce electricity and heat. The ATT will process 100,000tpa of waste while the AD facility will process 60,000tpa.

RPS provided full Planning, Project Management and co-ordination services, working with an in-house project team of eight specialist teams together with three external specialist consultants selected by Trent Developments.

The co-ordination role provided by RPS allowed the initial findings from the specialist assessments to be fed back to the facility designers, enabling the design proposals to be refined and adapted to incorporate appropriate mitigation measures and ensure that the construction and operation of the facility would not result in any unacceptable environmental impacts.

Kelda Water Services

Kelda Water Services, North Yorkshire

RPS completed planning applications and assessments for two Anaerobic Digestion Plants.

Each development comprises a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Anaerobic Digester (AD) plant and associated ancillary infrastructure adjacent to existing sewage treatment works.

Both facilities will handle approximately 48,000tpa of organic waste which will be sourced from the local area. The heat and electricity produced will be used to power the sewage treatment works, contributing towards our client’s vision of running their sewage treatment operations solely on renewable energy.

The approach to the planning applications and range and scope of supporting assessments was agreed with the respective Local Planning Authorities via a series of pre-application consultation meetings.

Rotherdale Anaerobic Digestion Plant

Rotherdale Anaerobic Digestion Plant, Evesham

Springhill Farms Ltd

RPS completed a planning application and assessments for a development including a Combined Heat and Power Plant (CHP), Anaerobic Digester (AD), beef unit and associated ancillary infrastructure adjacent to an existing grain store at Rotherdale Farm in Evesham, Throckmorton.

The facility has a capacity of 17,600tpa with feedstock comprising 13,200tpa of energy crop, 1,000tpa of cow manure and 3,400tpa of poultry droppings.

The heat and electricity produced by the plant will be used both at Rotherdale Farm and at the adjacent poultry unit with the surplus electricity being sold to the National Grid.

The approach to the planning application and range and scope of supporting assessments was agreed with the Local Authority via a series of pre-application consultation meetings.

Shanks Waste Solutions

RPS provided planning advice and supporting assessments for a combined Anaerobic Digestion and In Vessel Composting Facility that treats up to 48,000tpa of separated and co-mingled food and garden waste with and without packaging.

The proposed development will produce a range of products including:

Biogas for conversion to renewable energy (with up to ten million Kilowatt hours pa available for export)

Quality compost accredited to the nationally recognised PAS100 or PAS110 standard. Solid Recovered Fuel from plastic fractions as an alternative to fossil fuel

Recyclate including ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

Buckinghamshire County Council Development Control Planning Committee voted unanimously to grant planning permission three months after submission.

RPS have subsequently supported Shanks in securing a variation to the approved layout.
