Developing sustainable and innovative spaces to inspire and influence

We have worked with some of the country’s largest commercial developers and land owners on a variety of projects from office towers to business parks to data centres to high-specification financial services buildings.

We have the in-house capability to seamlessly move projects through the development lifecycle from planning to design to implementation. Our planners have unrivalled local knowledge which enables them to address potential pitfalls in advance and our designers are always one step ahead, designing offices that meet institutional standards and providing innovative solutions to energy conservation and low carbon technologies.

Vodafone Call Centre

Vodafone Call Centre, Stoke-on-Trent

Vodafone UK / Stoke-On-Trent Regeneration Ltd

RPS provided a multi-disciplinary range of services for the development of the award winning, Vodafone Call Centre.

RPS secured planning for an office development on the 4.69ha site and provided architectural designs, using 3D modelling software to house two large open plan, double height workspaces for a total of 850 people. It incorporates full backup facilities for staff including a 300 person Cafeteria.

RPS provided acoustic advice to meet the challenging requirements of good speech intelligibility in large open plan spaces. The building featured the latest locally controlled displacement air vent technology and state of the art daylight controlled lighting. It also incorporates various sustainable design initiatives including rainwater recycling and a Quiet Revolution axial wind turbine strategically placed at the head elevation of the scheme.

The 94,500ft2 building is formed by a wing shaped roof spanning 45m in a single sweep and it is 140m long with car parking provided for 420 people.

Berkley Commercial CSC

RPS played a key role in obtaining planning consent for a European Headquarters for CSC with a range of landscape services.

The B1 office space sits within a heavily wooded site within a ‘Strategic Gap’. RPS support included site analysis, character appraisal, tree quality assessments and ecological work. We went on to prepare the landscape masterplan, detailed design for both hard and soft works and undertook site inspections during the construction.

Proactive negotiations with the Local Authority (LA) successfully achieved an increased consent over the original local authority brief. The landscape and tree quality surveys were instrumental to consent for 35,000m2 of development compared to an initial LA brief of approximately 21,000m2.

The project architects responded to RPS’ analysis and landscape concept with an imaginative building layout consisting of four towers interlocked with specimen trees and woodland and linked by a double height glazed podium. The semi-mature lavender field is the centrepiece of the landscape design.

Rochdale Municipal Offices

Rochdale Municipal Offices, Manchester

Rochdale MBC

RPS provided Building Services for a first-class office space and retail and leisure hub as part of an ambitious project for the regeneration of Rochdale town centre

The 28,000m2 development of council and NHS office space includes a new public library and customer services point.

The riverside offices were built on the former Yelloway bus depot’s riverside site and accommodates approximately 2,000 employees from the council and partner organisations. RPS provided expert Mechanical & Electrical engineering advice for the building, helping it achieve its target of an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM rating. RPS also provided Acoustics and Fire Engineering expertise on the project.

This is the second Local Authority Headquarters office project awarded to RPS in recent times with the firm currently providing the same services on Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council’s new 40,000ft2 office building.

Snow Hill

Snow Hill, Birmingham

Ballymore

RPS provided Mechanical and Electrical designs for an executive office development, considered to be one of the largest city centre redevelopment schemes in Birmingham.

The scheme includes high quality office accommodation, plus retail use at ground level and features two towers containing residential apartments and a hotel, arranged around new landscaped squares, boulevards and piazzas.

The development consists of three main buildings. Buildings 1 and 2 form the executive office development, and Building 3 is the hotel and residential section. RPS were involved with the design for Building 1, providing Building Services Engineering services. We were responsible for the detailed design of the Mechanical & Electrical Services for Building 1 through to RIBA stage F2.

Building 1 consists of 11 storeys of office accommodation (30,000m2), ground floor retail, three floors of basement car parking, plus two levels of plant space at roof level.

IM Properties

At the heart of Birmingham’s business district, this exciting project demonstrates DBK’s expertise through the provision of cost management and CDM consultancy / principal designer services.

The scheme intends to mirror Birmingham’s proud industrial past through a combination of classical elegance and modern efficiency, restoring the original Victorian features, stripping out some recent additions, and creating 160,000ft2 of office space alongside 70 parking spaces. A new 6th floor is to be added.

The classical fa├žade’s windows have the original Victorian stonework, but will be fitted with high performance glass to minimise heat loss and cut down the warming effect of the summer sun. A brown roof is to be fitted as well to minimise rainwater run-off and provide effective insulation.

Hidden away for decades, the main reception features a superb Victorian banking hall which will enclose the main reception desk and an informal meeting area. The high ceiling and a light well over the foyer will create a feeling of light and space, a feeling which will extend throughout the building due to a central lift atrium and two other light wells. This will be the first Birmingham building of its size to incorporate a Variable Refrigeration Flow (VRF) heating and cooling system, using air source heat pump technology to minimise energy costs, and create a comfortable working environment all year round.

Routeco Ltd

Routeco, Milton Keynes

Routeco Ltd

RPS provided Civil and Structural Engineering designs for an office space of three buildings totalling 42,800ft2.

To maintain consistency, the facility was constructed in similar materials to existing units on the park whilst maintaining its own identity.

The client also stipulated that the existing buildings had to remain operational throughout the design and construction period which resulted in a carefully phased operation on site.

Two and three storey offices have a structural steel frame of two wings around a central glazed feature entrance incorporating the lifts and stairs within a double height entrance atrium.

Our engineers were responsible for the design and specification of materials for the:

Reinforced concrete ground floor slab

Composite concrete/steel upper floors to optimise structural efficiency and reduce structural floor depth

Drainage for the unit

Reconfiguration of the car parks.

Our teams successfully delivered this project on time and to budget using BIM technology. The building achieved a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’.
