Limerick Tunnel
The Limerick Tunnel is part of one of the largest and most important construction projects undertaken in mid-west Ireland to date. At a cost of around €660 million, this major piece of infrastructural development forms a critical part of the road network in the Limerick area and an important part of the Transport-21 programme.
Once completed this landmark project will remove up to 40,000 vehicles per day from Limerick city centre, eliminate traffic congestion, improve air quality, lower CO2 emissions and allow for further pedestrianisation of the city. Construction started on the Tunnel project in August 2007 and is due for completion in September 2010.
The Scheme is the second phase of the Limerick Southern Ring Road project connecting the N7 at Rossbrien to the N18 Ennis Road at Cratloe Castle. It is comprised of a 675m twin bore immersed tube tunnel crossing of the River Shannon as well as 8 miles of dual carriageway, 11 bridges, 6 underpasses, 3 junctions and 2 toll plazas.
