N11 Arklow Rathnew & N7 Newlands Cross Upgrade PPP

Transport Infrastructure Ireland

16.5km of motorway in County Wicklow and major urban interchange in Dublin delivered on budget and ahead of programme.

RPS is Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s Representative on this €282m PPP project since 2009. The project includes the M11 Rathnew to Arklow motorway which opened in July 2015, the N7 Newlands Cross Junction Upgrade which opened in November 2014 and a motorway service area on the Gorey Bypass due to open shortly.

The M11 project was completed seven weeks ahead of programme and will reduce journey times by between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. It comprises 16.5km of toll-free 2 lane motorway, two grade separated junctions, eight bridges, realignment of sections of the old N11 and link roads to tie into the existing road network.

Newlands Cross grade separated free flow junction on the N7 Dublin/Cork road has replaced the last signal-controlled junction between the Northern Ireland border and the Dunkettle roundabout in Cork. The N7 at this location carries approximately 90,000 people daily and the junction upgrade, with three lanes in each direction, will reduce journey times.

The flyover element has a two-span bridge structure with extensive embankments on the east and west sides of the junction. The materials used for the embankments were all sourced locally and environmentally friendly cement was used to reduce CO2 emissions. The Newlands Cross Flyover was awarded the Irish Concrete Society Award for Infrastructure in April 2017.
