The former PCB building is now the prestigious headquarter offices of Aer Lingus following a major refurbishment by RPS structural engineers.

RPS was appointed by DAA to carry out structural and condition appraisals and assessment of the existing 4-storey building. Having identified remedial issues and new building requirements, our structural engineers prepared specimen design for the €4m design build contract. This involved major refurbishment and structural modifications, including a new full height brise soleil façade.

This project is an excellent example of the importance of detailed structural investigation of an existing building and consideration of structural design solutions to facilitate the successful and cost effective transition to a fully functional modern office building.

Dublin Airport Terminal 1 Extension

RPS provided structural engineering design and project management services for the €55m extension of Terminal 1 at Dublin Airport.

The 7,500m² airside Terminal 1 Extension was designed to improve passenger circulation space and comfort in the terminal areas consisting of arrivals & departures facilities over two levels, and ancillary support accommodation including additional check-in areas with baggage facilities, retail and restaurant/bars on the mezzanine level.

The structure above ground level is suspended so that the apron area below the building is retained for use by ground handlers and other services. RPS was responsible for structural engineering works for the outline design of the 1,100 tonne structural steel frame supported on 30 concrete column foundations, the engineering for the fritted glazed façade and the utility services diversions and reinstatement for the airside compound. Our structural engineers acted as technical reviewer, contract administrator and site supervisor for the construction phase of the project.

Horse Racing Ireland

RPS was the structural engineer for the design of the landmark headquarters of Horse Racing Ireland, a highly acclaimed office and functions building in Newbridge, overlooking the Curragh Racecourse.

Horse Racing Ireland commissioned RPS for the structural engineering of an office building that would host receptions, meetings and functions for the horse racing industry throughout the world. The building is an example of quality design, construction and materials to reflect Ireland’s premier role in the global horse racing industry.

The €8m 2 storey, 3000m² structure is of concrete frame with aluminium curtain walling system and stone cladding to the external façade. Our structural engineers were responsible for the detailed design and technical advisory role during construction.

Stewart (on behalf of the OPW)

RPS has achieved LEED Gold Certification for the new 4,900m2 Department of Justice & Equality offices in Tipperary Town.

RPS was appointed in 2010 by Stewart and the OPW to act as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) consultant for the project.

Our role on this project was to ensure that the development was specified according to the sustainability principles of the LEED certification system and that design and construction met the requirements of the LEED rating system to achieve the target of LEED Gold. This involved input to design team meetings and coordinating all of the stakeholders to ensure the delivery of the appropriate drawings and documents for review by the USGBC.

RPS’ experience in sustainable design, including waste prevention, minimisation and management and energy efficiency has proved hugely beneficial in the LEED process.

Crofton Developments

RPS was the structural engineer for the design of the highly acclaimed Harbour Square Development, a mixed-use development of commercial offices, retail units and residential apartments on a confined urban site overlooking Dublin Bay.

The €60m development has 5 interlinked blocks with a shared 2-storey underground basement car parking and concrete podium. The development on a 2.2 acre site comprises 35,000m² of 6-storey commercial offices, retail and 118 residential apartments and landscaped plaza area. The design is of reinforced concrete to the offices and modular apartments with precast concrete floors and pod units to bathroom/utility areas and steel frame construction to the upper floor.

RPS structural engineers were responsible for the design and provided full time site supervision, ensuring that our reputation for innovative and co-ordinated ‘right first time’ design and quality of construction was maintained whilst the buildings were completed to the client’s ambitious fast track programme. The landmark commercial and residential development is now a recognised example of excellence in design and construction.
