Protecting The Past – Planning The Future

RPS is providing Geographic Information System (GIS) based archaeological risk mapping for mine exploration programmes throughout New South Wales – thus providing advanced warning of potential archaeological site locations.

This proven method is particularly useful in the exploration, mining and energy sectors because subsequent mine plans can be designed to avoid sensitive archaeological areas. By implementing systems to safeguard ancient landscapes and sites, mine operations can avoid costly and time-consuming statutory permit processes.

The advantage of using a GIS based process is that it produces rapid, flexible assessments and provides easy-to-interpret visual outputs suitable for use by personnel in the field. Major coal mine operators in Australia have been quick to grasp the effectiveness of this new and innovative archaeological modelling. They are also using it to solve unique mining problems associated with subsidence and borehole placement – with seven different projects now completed.

The proven GIS process developed by RPS has been shown to be equally effective in other areas – including land development. The information generated is invaluable to planning professionals involved in making strategic planning decisions.

RPS archaeological risk mapping provides greater overall knowledge and enhanced assessment – leading to the implementation of better-balanced and more confident planning decisions.
