New Cancer Research Centre

05 May 2009

A new Cancer Trials Research Centre at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital – with engineering service designed by RPS – has recently been officially opened.

The Centre, which contains treatment wards and highly sophisticated diagnostic and treatment equipment, forms part of a major project to integrate renal and cancer treatment functions at the Freeman Hospital into a single unit. The project also involves the redevelopment of the Royal Victoria Infirmary to provide a centralised focus for trauma services.

Both sites are supplied with heat and electricity from highly efficient CHP (Combined Heat & Power) Energy Centres – which also incorporate absorption chillers to meet the substantial cooling demand. The CHP-generated electricity is transmitted to the two hospital sites via new substations – with all essential power requirements being met by dedicated generators located in each Energy Centre.

The power, heating, cooling and associated building services for this technically complex project were designed by RPS – working with Laing O’Rourke, the main contractor.
