Most Advanced Public Sports Facility In UK

15 January 2009
RPS is producing civil and structural engineering designs for a 100-acre multi-sports complex in Scotland.

Playgolf Kilmartin Ltd has appointed RPS to provide design services for the latest addition to their portfolio of community-based ‘Playsport’ facilities – a multi-sports complex in East Kilbride, Glasgow.

Engineers at RPS’s Newark office are providing civil and structural engineering design services for the c£13m development.  Design of the new site access, to adoptable standards, and the production of a Travel Plan have also been provided by the RPS highways and transportation team.

The development, due to open in 2009, will boast sport’s latest innovation, PowerPlay Golf; the two-flag game rated by many as golf’s equivalent to Twenty20 cricket.  The 9-hole ‘tribute’ golf course, based on some of Great Britain’s most famous links holes will sit alongside a state-of-the-art, sports venue equating to an area roughly the same size as London’s Canary Wharf.  It will include:

  • Eight five-a-side, and two seven-a-side, football pitches with artificial playing surfaces.
  • A 58-bay floodlit and heated two-tier golf driving range.
  • 2,500m2 health & fitness suite.
  • Children's soft play area.
  • Around 3,000m2 of retail space, restaurant, bar & conference facilities.
  • 6,800m2 indoor sports hall.

With these facilities, the complex will be the most advanced public sports facility in the UK.
