De Beers Rolls-out BS OHSAS 18001

27 February 2009

De Beers, one of the World’s largest diamond mining companies, has rolled-out BS OHSAS 18001 across its entire mining operations as well as its UK research facility and offices – with the aim of reducing its global accident rate to zero.

De Beers prides itself on its strong health and safety background – and BS OHSAS 18001 allows this background to be formalised. Working to these high standards has helped raise general health and safety awareness amongst the organisation’s 17,000 global employees.

RPS worked closely with De Beers in the United Kingdom during the development of the management system and acted as independent internal auditors. The work involved an initial Gap Analysis of the safety management system in place at both the London Head Office and the research facility in Maidenhead. From the Gap Analysis a new Health and Safety management system was developed and implemented to meet the requirements of BS OHSAS 18001 – and it was decided to seek accreditation for the London-based operations first.

The high quality of the consultancy advice provided by RPS enabled the accreditation of the management system to be achieved with no non-conformances to be addressed.
