The RPS landscape architecture team completed detailed design, documentation and construction services for the Townsville Hospital Expansion Project. The landscape strategy for this site addressed the need for a unified, accessible and green landscape to accommodate development and expansion into 2017. The provision of a hospital landscape consisting of comfort, shade, shelter, appropriate scale and texture not only provides visual relief from the built form but also alternative health benefits conducive to the healing facility.
While the hospital landscape acts as a unifying element between new and existing buildings, it also functions as an outdoor retreat from the hospital and celebrates Townsville’s unique dry-tropical landscape. As well as offering a response to human comfort requirements, the landscape acts as a way finding element providing direction and binding the campus’ distinctive spaces.
