RPS provided multidisciplinary support to the design and construction of this major 80 ha brownfield residential and marina development south of Fremantle. Port Coogee is a now landmark marina and urban renewal development having transformed a derelict industrial coastline into a waterfront hub in Western Australia. The project was highly political at local and State government levels, and required a strategic, collaborative approach to secure approvals.
RPS has been responsible for preparing the environmental review, negotiating and securing environmental formal approvals, provision of technical advice on contamination remediation, and management of environmental impacts during the marina development. RPS inputs for water management have included the design of a groundwater interception drain to prevent nutrient rich groundwater entering the new marina, and reusing this water as an alternative water supply, complete with an aquifer reinjection system. This action both improved the water quality entering the marina environment and provided a third pipe irrigation option for use in irrigating the parklands and private households.
Seagrass monitoring, groundwater and marina water quality monitoring has been ongoing post-construction with associated compliance reporting. RPS continues to be engaged to fulfil the client’s environmental monitoring obligations associated with Ministerial Conditions.
RPS services included:
State environmental approvals for a 300 boat pen marina and residential development
Contaminated sites investigation and remediation
Dewatering and groundwater management
Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR)
Marine water quality monitoring and post-construction compliance
Contractor supervision (environmental)
