Newington Suburb (Olympic Village), Sydney, NSW

Newington Suburb (Olympic Village), Sydney, NSW

The suburb of Newington is 15km from Sydney’s CBD and was the home to the 2000 Sydney Olympics housing 16,000 athletes. Today, Newington comprises 2,000 dwellings and includes 400 hectares of parkland, pedestrian linkages, a school and shopping centre.

RPS (as Whelans Insites) was integrally involved with this project from inception, and was engaged by Mirvac at an early stage to assist in creating a viable suburb that could operate as a secure Olympic Village during the 2000 Sydney Olympics and convert to public use and ownership after the Games. The titling methodology also needed to provide cash flow by facilitating public ownership in pre-Olympic mode, maintain private use by the developer and athletes whilst in Olympic mode, and subsequently enable residential components of the development to be sold to private buyers after the games concluded.
