RPS was engaged by Laing O’Rourke to complete comprehensive detail surveys for design of the Pilot Training System Facilities at various RAAF bases throughout Australia. The surveys included greenfield sites, location of existing runways and taxiways, details of existing buildings and facilities, the surface location of relevant services, as well as the location of underground detail of services by conventional and alternative methods.
During the course of this project RPS used Electro-Magnetic Location (EML) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) equipment to locate underground services, both airside and landside. Underground services location was required to confirm the position of services in relation to existing Defence base documentation, and to avoid conflict in the design of new facilities and services.
Internal scanning of relevant buildings and hangars at RAAF Bases East Sale, Pearce and Edinburgh was also undertaken to assist with the design for refurbishment of existing buildings.
Despite many and varied logistical issues associated with working on Department of Defence bases, the surveys were completed within tight timeframes to keep the overall project timetable on schedule.
