RPS architects and engineers designed the transformation of a single-floor 1980’s shop into a 21st century, two-level superstore, achieving an increase in floor space of over 60%. This provided an additional 33,700 ft2 of sales area, making this the largest store for Sainsbury’s Retail and the first store to use a mezzanine level for general merchandise sales.
This extensive remodelling was undertaken with no disruption to trading and involved:
A complete re-design of the store layout
Full refurbishment of the existing store
A new store front extension
A new two-storey side extension incorporating lift, stairs and travellator
A new café at mezzanine level
A new 3-level multi-story car park connected to the store.
RPS used Autodesk Revit 3D Design and Construction technology to design and deliver the complex project. This enabled the architects and engineers to work effectively hand-in-hand using the same evolving 3D building information model. This software allowed the client and contractor access to true-to-life images of every aspect of the project, and the ability to process changes and refinements quickly and easily throughout construction.
Significant cost & time savings were made using Revit as it:
Highlights potential clashes between different elements of the design, well before any materials are fabricated or delivered to site
Generates complete three-dimensional models to provide not only the 3D views Sainsbury’s needed to make informed decisions but also the accurate construction information required by the main contractor and the sub-contractors
Automatically compiles schedules of quantities.
